2024-0604 - Flyer About Wheelie Bin Rollout In Brackenbury

Dear All

The following email has been received from a neighbouring Residents Association, the Brackenbury Residents Association ("BRA") about the issuing of wheelie bins in their area.

It may not be relevant to everyone but it is sent for your information.

Please find attached a copy of a flyer which we will shortly distribute to all potentially affected residences in Brackenbury.

We are two long-standing members of Brackenbury Residents Association. Whilst BRAhas a large and active membership within our area, its communications still only reach a small proportion of Brackenbury residents. Working with the BRA committee, we have developed this flyer in order to provide important information to everyone, in what we feel is a reasonable and balanced way.

Early phases of the borough-wide wheelie bin rollout produced considerable disquiet for several reasons. Bins often seemed over-sized relative to the property (and especially the front garden), bins were placed in awkward and inappropriate places, blocking windows, bicycles, bin sheds or even balancing on front steps, and above all there was a strong impression given that it was mandatory to use the bins if your property could accommodate them, even though this is not the case, as the Council has acknowledged.

In the six-month run-up to our phase of the rollout, there has been extensive dialogue with the Council over these points, and a real sense created that things would be different for us. In particular a smaller 93cm/120L bin was sourced. However, the latest Council letters to residents make no mention of this smaller bin as an option, and still strongly imply that using the new bins is mandatory. Distant locations for drop-in sessions seem designed to minimise interactions rather than facilitate them. On the face of it, little to nothing has changed.

This is the background against which we feel our flyer is necessary.

Your area may already have received bins, or it may be about to get them. In either case, I hope you find what we are doing of interest and relevant to your membership. Even if bins have already been delivered, they can be returned or swapped for a shorter, 93cm bin.

Best wishes,
